As AI and deep tech redefine the possible, I have witnessed countless brilliant founders fail. They don’t fail because their technology is flawed; they fail because they chase “cool tech” without validating Scenario Maturity.

In high-stakes innovation, hype doesn’t pay the bills. To navigate this, I leverage a rigorous Scenario Maturity Assessment Framework, a methodology pioneered by enterprise AI leaders like Zheng Yan at Huawei Cloud. It serves as a “Scenario Compass,” separating true signal from noise.

Scenario Compass KellyOnTech Mans International

Today, I apply this framework to one of the most explosive—and misunderstood—frontiers in the global market: Brain-Computer Interface (BCI).

The Scenario Compass: Three Critical Questions for Growth-Stage Founders

For growth-stage founders, the challenge shifts from validation to scale. This framework determines whether you become a unicorn or a cautionary tale:

  1. Business Maturity: Is there a scalable procurement pathway? Who owns the P&L?
  2. Data Maturity: Does your data pipeline create a defensible moat? Does the workflow generate continuous improvement loops?
  3. Technology Maturity: Is your technology deployment-ready for commercial scale, or are you relying on roadmap promises?
Scenario Maturity Assessment Framework KellyOnTech Mans International
Scenario Maturity Assessment Framework

Deconstructing BCI: Four Scenarios, Four Realities

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is one of the most hyped AI frontiers today. Yet, when you apply scenario maturity, the picture becomes much clearer.

1. Medical Rehabilitation

  • Business Maturity (High): Payers are clear (patients, insurance, rehab hospitals).
  • Data Maturity (High): Clinical data exists. Each patient interaction generates natural, labelled data streams.
  • Technology Maturity (Medium): Invasive BCI is human-validated.

This is the most sustainable long-term play for serious capital.

2. Neuro Diagnosis & Monitoring (Anesthesia, ADHD, Insomnia)

  • Business Maturity (High): Payers are hospitals (Anesthesia/Psychiatry departments).
  • Data Maturity (High): Every surgery is a data source.
  • Technology Maturity (High): Technology is relatively mature.

The low-hanging fruit offers immediate commercialization potential with established workflows.

3. Consumer Entertainment & Smart Home (Mind-Control Gaming, Appliances)

  • Business Maturity (Low): Unclear payer. No standard workflow.
  • Data Maturity (Low): High noise in home environments. High privacy concerns.
  • Technology Maturity (Low): Non-invasive dry electrodes lack precision for fine control. VR/AR + BCI is still largely lab-bound.

R&D investments carry significant risk, so don’t burn runway here expecting immediate revenue.

4. Military & Special Operations

  • Business Maturity (Niche): Payer is the Military.
  • Data Maturity (High Barrier): Data is not shared.
  • Technology Maturity (Extreme): Requires extreme robustness, anti-interference, portability, and low detectability.

The moat is expensive to dig, but impenetrable when complete.

Global Framework, Local Execution: The China Case Study

While the Scenario Maturity Framework is universal, its application requires localized intelligence. In 2026, China stands as the definitive testing ground.

Global BCI financing reached $1.3 billion between 2025 and 2026. Remarkably, Chinese BCI financing in Q1 2026 alone surpassed the full-year total of 2025.

The strategic signal is unequivocal: In 2026, China elevated BCI to a National Strategic Priority within the Government Work Report, categorizing it under “New Quality Productive Forces” (新质生产力).

New Quality Productive Forces” (新质生产力) Mans International

Why Global Founders Stall in China

Even with great tech, foreign founders often hit a wall in China because they ignore the nuances of the Scenario Compass:

  1. The “Medical Bridge” Requirement: Many try to jump straight to consumer apps. In China, medical certification (NMPA) is the “trust badge” that unlocks consumer confidence and institutional scaling.
  2. The Data Sovereignty Wall: Neural data is the ultimate “Personal Information.” Under China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), a localized data storage and compliance strategy is mandatory from Day 1.
  3. Local Competition: Companies like Xiangyu Medical are already moving through the maturity matrix. Speed to localization is your only defence.

Your Strategic Next Steps

Is your technology aligned with market reality, or are you building in a vacuum?

  • Are you burning cash on low-maturity consumer scenarios while high-maturity medical paths are open?
  • Do you have a roadmap to leverage the world’s fastest-growing BCI ecosystem without losing your IP?

At Mans International, we help founders and investors bridge the gap between global innovation and localized market reality.

AI can replicate your product, your code, and your pricing model. But it can’t replicate your Why.

Last week, we gathered for the Mans International February session to tackle the “AI Paradox.” We explored why storytelling isn’t a soft skill — it’s the only defensible moat left for tech founders. Here is the recap of our deep dive into the Strategic Storytelling Matrix.

The AI Paradox Your story as the ultimate unfair advantage Mans International
Mans International Founder Empowerment February session

“Why should anyone believe in this?”

In an attention-scarce world, feature lists are noise. Features explain function; stories ignite belief. The breakthrough lies in Strategic Narrative Architecture — the deliberate alignment of technology with human aspiration.

This isn’t a “soft skill.” It is your sharpest competitive weapon.

Three Strategic Frameworks Every Founder Must Master

Framework 1: From Industry Player to Meaning Architect

Pantone didn’t win by cataloging colours. They won by owning the narrative of colour. They transformed a technical spec into a universal language.

The Founder’s Pivot: Stop describing what you build. Start shaping how the world interprets your category.

Pantone case study Mans International
  • Engineer Cultural Rhythm: The “Colour of the Year” isn’t a press release; it’s a nine-month cultural cadence.
  • Decode the Emotional Climate: “Mocha Mousse” (2025) isn’t a shade — it’s a diagnosis of a collective longing for balance.
  • Embed via Ecosystems: By partnering with companies like Microsoft and Huawei, Pantone makes colour a strategic infrastructure rather than a decoration.

The Insight: When your storytelling becomes the lens through which others interpret reality, you command influence far beyond functionality.

Framework 2: Shift the Battlefield — from Features to Values

In crowded markets, competing on specs is a surrender. Left Field (the dating app) refused the algorithm arms race and built a defensible moat through shared values.

The dating app Left Field Mans International
  • Reframe the Core Question: Shift from “How do we optimize matches?” to “How do we rebuild a trustworthy connection?”
  • Cultivate Identity, Not Interaction: Through rituals (hiking circles, book clubs), the product facilitates who the user becomes. Retention becomes identity.
  • Magnetize Mission-Aligned Capital: Investors fund conviction. Left Field didn’t just show metrics; they articulated a generational truth.

The Insight: When using your product becomes an act of self-definition, you’ve built a movement, not just a marketplace.

Framework 3: Where AI Meets Human Truth

Petco Love Lost: Giving AI a Human Heartbeat

Technology without empathy is just noise. Petco Love Lost shows AI’s highest purpose: acting as a vessel for human devotion. With 170,000+ reunions, they prove that data can heal.

Petco Love Cost Case Study Mans International
  • Complexity → Intimacy: AI analyzes 512 pet characteristics. The technical depth exists solely to keep a promise: “We see you.”
  • Platform → Purpose: A tapestry across 3,100+ shelters, neighbours and cameras united under one covenant.
  • Metrics → Meaning: “170,000” isn’t a KPI. It’s 170,000 restored hearts.

The Insight: AI does not replace humanity; it amplifies it. When your AI serves the deepest human truths — loss, hope, belonging — it becomes unforgettable.

From Narrative to Leverage

Feeling the gap between what you’ve built and how it’s felt?

❌ Your pitch is clear — but not compelling.

❌ Your product works — but isn’t felt.

❌ AI accelerates execution — but your human truth remains unheard.

This is not a creativity problem. It’s a strategic storytelling gap.

The AI Paradox Your story as the ultimate unfair advantage Mans International

Pantone case study Mans International

Pantone's Narrative Architecture Mans International

Left Field Case Study Mans International

Petco Love Lost Mans International

Pets Mans International

  • 为融资路演找不到打动人的表达;
  • 明明产品好,却难以引发用户共鸣;

  • 2021年:聚焦单一生物指标(如心率、血氧);
  • 2023年:开始整合行为数据,提供初步干预建议;

KellyOnTech Mans International

What we see at CES 2026 is not merely the evolution of sensors, algorithms, or devices. We are witnessing a deeper dialogue between civilizations around one fundamental question: how humans sustain themselves under accelerating pressure.

I. CES 2026 Health Tech Trends:

From Data Tracking to Closed-Loop Intervention

Over the past five years, the evolution of health technology at CES has followed a clear trajectory:

  • 2021: Single metrics such as heart rate and blood oxygen
  • 2023: Behavioural data integration with basic recommendations
  • 2026: Multi-modal fusion, proactive intervention, and chronic risk prevention
insomnia–depression comorbidity KellyOnTech Mans International

The most striking shift this year is the rise of insomnia–depression comorbidity as a core focus of health technology. This is no coincidence. High-pressure populations worldwide are experiencing a mental health crisis — and it is catalyzing a non-pharmaceutical intervention revolution.

Two CES-launched products illustrate this shift.

Zero-Gravity Mental Recovery Pods

Originally developed for astronauts, zero-gravity posture technology redistributes body weight evenly, significantly reducing muscular tension and physical stress. When integrated with a specialized helmet for immersive audio and cranial vibration therapy, these systems aim to improve sleep quality and emotional regulation. Already validated in French military settings, this technology is moving rapidly into premium consumer and enterprise wellness markets — signalling a future where recovery becomes infrastructure, not a luxury.

Non-Invasive Neurostimulation Glasses

These AI-powered wearable glasses apply 40Hz gamma-frequency light stimulation, inspired by neuroscience research exploring its potential role in supporting cognitive performance and neural regulation. Foundational studies from MIT and NIH-funded research suggest that gamma oscillations may enhance cerebral blood flow and activate brain mechanisms associated with beta-amyloid clearance — primarily demonstrated in preclinical models.

Positioned as cognitive support rather than a medical device, it represents a new wave of accessible, non-invasive consumer neurotechnology.

The unifying direction is clear: health technology is evolving toward a prevent–intervene–restore closed loop.

II. The Founder’s Blind Spot: Success Inside a Three-Way Health Storm

Founders are among the most exposed populations in this new reality.

Chronic sleep deprivation, decision overload, relentless screen exposure, and emotional isolation create a perfect storm of depression, insomnia, and visual fatigue. External success often masks internal collapse.

The Health Storm KellyOnTech Mans International

Perhaps most instructive is Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS Shoes. After building one of the most iconic mission-driven companies of the 2000s — donating millions of shoes worldwide and selling half the company for $625 million — he fell into profound depression, anxiety, and chronic insomnia.

His experience reveals a hard truth: a mission without the physiological and psychological capacity to sustain it is unsustainable.

Even as AI becomes embedded in daily workflows, founder health is not improving. A Wall Street Journal investigation found that AI startup founders exhibit significantly higher rates of sleep disorders and psychological stress due to extreme work patterns and the myth of infinite productivity.

III. “Knowing When to Stop”: The Rarest Strategic Wisdom in the AI Era

At this point, Eastern philosophy offers something technology alone cannot: meta-wisdom.

The concept of 知止 (knowing when to stop) is not about retreat. It is about strategic throttling — the ability to reset systems before they collapse.

This wisdom operates on three levels.

1. Periodic Maintenance of the Physical System

As the Dao De Jing asks:
“Fame or life — which is more precious? Wealth or the body — which matters more?”
 Over-optimization inevitably leads to depletion.

2. Active Management of Cognitive Resources

Zhuangzi, the 4th-century BCE Chinese Daoist philosopher, warned:
“Life is finite, but knowledge is infinite.”
In an AI-driven information explosion, deliberate cognitive disengagement — not constant input — determines decision quality and creative insight.

3. Strategic Calibration of Business Rhythm

“One yin, one yang — this is the Dao.”

Pure acceleration violates system laws. Sustainable growth requires embedding restorative pauses (yin) into expansion and execution (yang). This balance is the foundation of anti-fragile organizations.

CES shows how tools can extend human capability — but knowing when to pause keeps those capabilities from turning against us.

The most sustainable innovators are not those who burn the brightest, but those who align body, mind, business cycles, and natural rhythms into long-term coherence.

The entrepreneurial journey can be lonely and high-pressure, and every ounce of stress and perseverance deserves to be seen. If this resonates, I invite you to share your entrepreneurial story with me via private message. Let’s accompany each other — balancing ambition with peace of mind — as we build what truly lasts.

We’ve reached the final days of 2025. A familiar question comes up: “If you had to summarize this year in one word, what would it be?”

In the ancient wisdom of the I Ching, the word of the year is “Ge” (革). It translates to “Revolution,” but its etymology is far more profound for decision-makers: It means stripping the fur from rawhide to create leather.

AI Rewrote the Rules KellyOnTech Mans International

Layoffs at major tech firms, the once-unthinkable automation of elite consulting and legal work, and long-standing AI warnings suddenly becoming lived reality — what used to feel abstract now feels personal. For decision makers, this year wasn’t about curiosity. It was about survival.

In moments like this, we need perspective — one that cuts through fear, respects human nature, and helps us act with clarity.

I. The Pivot: From “Inertia” to “Architecture”

There is a line from the 2025 blockbuster De Xian Jin Zhi that haunted many executives this year: “It is what it is, and it’s already like this.”

It is the mantra of survival inertia. It is the sound of a decision-maker acknowledging that market logic has failed and deciding to simply weather the storm. But in the era of AI rule-rewriting, inertia is fatal.

In the ancient wisdom of the I Ching, each year is associated with a guiding hexagram. 2025 corresponds to the 49th hexagram, Ge (Revolution) — a symbol of profound transformation through the deliberate removal of what no longer fits.

The Strategic Pattern Behind AI Winners

Look at where real breakthroughs happened this year:

  • The Hardware contrarians: While the world fought for GPU allocation in a brute-force arms race, Lightelligence went back to first principles. They ignored the silicon rules and bet on optical computing (photonics). They didn’t try to run faster in the old race; they changed the physics of the track.
  • The Service Architects: Legal AI unicorn Harvey didn’t just build a “chatbot for lawyers.” Knowing a faster horse won’t fix a broken cart, they redesigned high-stakes legal workflows — freeing attorneys from document drudgery to focus on judgment, strategy, and client trust.

Different industries. Same pattern:

Stop chasing optimization inside a collapsing framework. Start defining a new one.

II. The Anchor: Emotional Sovereignty in a “Mocha” World

Innovation requires adrenaline, but endurance requires calm.

It is no coincidence that amidst this technological velocity, Pantone selected “Mocha Mousse” (17–1230) as the Colour of the Year for 2025, a warm, grounded, unassuming brown.

The Colour of the Year 2025 Pantone Mocha Mousse KellyOnTech
The Colour of the Year 2025 Pantone Mocha Mousse

Why does this matter to a tech executive? Because the greatest risk to your company right now isn’t a competitor’s algorithm; it is your own burnout.

The cognitive load of 2025 — managing AI integration, calming investor nerves, navigating geopolitical shifts — requires a psychological anchor. “Mocha Mousse” is a reminder that high-tech requires high-touch.

The most resilient founders I worked with this year were those who protected their “offline sovereignty.” Share unhurried dinners with family. Go for walks with no purpose. These are not distractions from the work; they are the fuel for the high-stakes decision-making required.

For leaders navigating AI-driven change, emotional sustainability is now a strategic asset.

III. The Structure: The Era of the “Leaderless Dragon”

At the end of 2025, there is no need to dwell on past instability, nor to be overwhelmed by future uncertainty. Use your willpower to adapt to change.

Use your hands of creation to build new rules.

In the I Ching, Qian Gua offers a powerful image: “A group of dragons without a leader — auspicious.” When centralized authority dissolves, and old power structures fade, the roots of certainty may blur — but in that ambiguity, everyone gains the chance to rise. The true good omen is not waiting for instructions, but awakening the initiative within each person — calmly observing the situation, then acting with clarity and resolve.

2025 is a year of revolution — and also the beginning of a new order. In this once-in-a-century transformation, may you and I choose not to become floating objects carried by the waves, but architects who lay the first stones ourselves.

Let us use wisdom to break through.

Let us use warmth to protect our hearts.

Let us use creativity to keep moving forward.

History has never been written by observers. It is written by those who walk through the darkness — and still choose to light the way.

Step by step.

The Mid-Autumn Festival* is here again. Moonlight spills across the eaves, carrying the faint sweetness of osmanthus on the wind. Centuries ago, Chinese famous poet Li Bai said:

“The people of today do not see the moon of old,
But the same moon once shone on those before us.”

A friend, a fellow founder, recently asked me: After a year of relentless pursuit, what’s the single most authentic feeling that surfaces when the calendar finally forces you to stop?

My answer was simple: Cherish what you hold right now.

We use work to delay life. We say “later” to the people and moments that actually define success. We defer the difficult, immediate gratitude for an assumed, glorious “when-we-make-it” future.

This isn’t generic advice. This is a truth forged from the regret of lost moments—the high-cost transaction of trading presence for pursuit.

I. The Sunlit ‘Later’ That Became Never

My last summer before university, my grandmother visited. The afternoon sun, like warm amber, filled the room. She turned to me and whispered, “Shall I take you to university?”

Generated by Sora 2

My mind was already on the horizon—the campus, the future. I gently declined, citing the long journey, promising her a grand visit once I was settled. She just smiled. The light caught the silver in her hair.

I didn’t know then that some agreements come with no “later.” That sunlit afternoon, her quiet offer, and the warmth of her presence became my final, complete memory.

II. A Mentor Without a Photo

In my darkest professional valley, a mentor stood by me. He saw a “blooming flower” and a “rising sun,” when I saw only data points of failure. Our most pivotal conversations happened on walks because sitting too long hurt his back.

When I began my startup, he fell gravely ill. To avoid distracting me, he chose radio silence — a final, devastating act of support. By the time I rushed to his bedside, his once-tall frame had withered to a frail shadow. I had to stand at the foot of his bed for our eyes to meet.

Generated by Sora 2

We realized we had never taken a single photo together—always assuming there would be another chance.

But there wasn’t. Our story remains only in memory.

III. The Dog Who Walked Closest to the Street

And then there was my dog, Bubble—forever cheerful, forever protective. On walks, she always positioned herself closer to the road, nudging me gently toward safety. When I called my parents on video, she would push her big head into the camera, competing to see whose face was bigger.

Generated by Sora 2

Through every triumph and every setback—funding wins, product failures—she was there, offering joy or quiet companionship. Her short life taught me the purest definition of love and loyalty.

Technology has given me a way to preserve fragments of those moments. Photos, videos, and even AI reconstructions keep traces alive. But they are no substitute for the living presence we too often take for granted.

IV. What This Means for Us as Founders and Leaders

Entrepreneurs often live in the future—thinking in terms of scale, milestones, and exits. But life is happening now. And leadership is not only about building the next platform, product, or company; it’s also about how we honour the relationships and moments that give meaning to what we build.

The truth is: what softens us, sustains us, and makes us human is rarely the grand narrative. It’s the small things—the afternoon sunlight, a word of encouragement, a wagging tail.

As another Mid-Autumn moon rises, I return to an ancient line:

“Ancient and modern, like a flowing stream—
We gaze upon the same bright moon.”

Generated by Sora 2

Time carries us all forward. But tonight, under the same moon as countless generations before, we still hold the power to pause, reflect, and treasure the present.

So I leave you with one question:

Who—or what—deserves your attention right now, before “later” becomes too late?

Final Notes

As founders, investors, and leaders, may we learn not only to build companies that last—but also to live moments that matter.

Note: The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrating family reunion, observed on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, coinciding with the brightest full moon. A key tradition is eating mooncakes—dense, round pastries with a variety of sweet or savoury fillings that symbolize the full moon.

In this episode, I will introduce an edtech startup, Little Bridge, dedicated to helping children aged 6 to 12 learn English in a fun, productive way, and use it to socialise safely with children from around the world. It is headquartered in London, England.

How does Little Bridge keep teens children safe online?

First, they designed a two-tier review mechanism, where all messages are reviewed twice before appearing on the platform. First, using artificial intelligence technology, the platform automatically checks every message the kids send and filters out those that don’t meet the criteria, such as swear words and non-English words. Then, messages that pass the automatic review are sent to their 24/7 human review team, which double-checks each message before it appears on the site.

Second, for added security, Little Bridge equips each parent of a child who uses its community with a linked account, called the “Parent Dashboard.” The dashboard allows parents to create accounts for their children, access information about their children’s activities on the platform, and also purchase subscriptions for learning content.

Third, each child in Little Bridge can customise their profile picture in the form of a virtual avatar for added security.

How does the content created by Little Bridge appeal to children?

Little Bridge creates all the content on the platform itself and owns the IP. Research they have conducted in collaboration with the University College London in the UK showed that learning content combined with community can improve learning outcomes. Little Bridge’s approach is to use “deep processing” to help children learn English skills effectively. After learning certain content, children can have real-time conversations in the community with children from all over the world. The new language skills are transferred from “superficial processing” to “deep processing”, which improves the efficiency of learning English.

Little Bridge’s IP is also unique because it actually makes up a story. Little Bridge is not just the name of the company, it is also the name of the virtual town where these characters live. As the learning content progresses, a fun story unfolds where children can learn all about these characters and their lives. This also increases the children’s motivation to learn new content constantly to understand what will happen next. Children can get involved and enrich the storyline together.

Little Bridge — KellyOnTech entrepreneurial story series

In order to encourage children to actively participate, Little Bridge has also created a game currency called “Lingos”. If children complete a task, they can get rewards and use the earned “Lingos” to optimise their database.

Currently, Little Bridge offers more than 700 different types of activities and about 300 hours of study. These activities cover all the key skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

How does Little Bridge’s community work?

As a competitive advantage that sets Little Bridge apart from its competitors, Little Bridge has created a “window to the world” for children. Children choose and design their own fun virtual avatars, and safely make friends with children from all over the world. Real-time communication in English not only consolidates their English knowledge, but also helps them understand different races and cultures, increases mutual respect and trust, and lives together more harmoniously.

Founder’s Story

Sarah White, co-founder and co-CEO of Little Bridge, struggled with the traditional education system. She has turned the tide against the odds by continuing to learn on her own and always maintaining a growth mindset. What impressed me most was the kind of heartfelt love that Sarah showed for Little Bridge, being sincere and friendly to people, and taking things very seriously with attention to detail. Sarah specially recorded a video, let us listen to her own heartfelt words.

Text version of Sarah’s self-introduction video

Hi, My name is Sarah white, I’m co-founder and co-CEO of Little Bridge, where we make social media safe and fun for kids around the world.

My story of becoming an entrepreneur starts out like some of the greats; I dropped out of school. That’s how Bill Gates got started, right?

Well, not exactly. Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard. I dropped out of highschool when I was 16. I was a smart kid, I just had a big problem with being told what to do, especially when I didn’t see a reason to do it.

Despite leaving formal education many years before my peers, I’ve never stopped learning; and have always maintained a growth mindset.

I went straight from school into full-time work, and have since done every job you can imagine, all the while learning as much as I could. But I always wanted to do something bigger, I just didn’t know where to start.

It all changed for me when several years ago, I was fortunate enough to meet Emma Rogers, a seasoned entrepreneur who took a chance on me and became my mentor. In 2015 we founded Little Bridge.

I hope my unusual journey to becoming an entrepreneur can help inspire people who haven’t had the easiest transition to adulthood. My journey is also what makes me so passionate about edtech; as someone who struggled with formal education, technology opens up a world of opportunities to learn and develop outside of traditional schooling.

Sarah summed up the secret to Little Bridge’s success — perseverance and a great idea, plus a little luck. Congratulations to Little Bridge on their successful foray into Silicon Valley. They will participate in the events organised by the Draper University this summer.

Finally, I would like to give the motto of Tim Draper, the founder of Draper University, to every entrepreneur with a dream and forging ahead: “The more times you try something new, the better your chances of success.”

At the beginning of 2022, I will continue to introduce the entrepreneurial stories of my old and new friends in the technology circle, hoping to inspire you through their entrepreneurial stories. Before I introduce today’s entrepreneur, let’s talk about the global drug development situation.

Global drug development market status

The global market for new drug R&D is worth $70 billion in 2020 and is expected to rise to $110 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 10%. The market outlook is good, so let me ask you, what is the failure rate of drug R&D globally in the first place?

The failure rate of drug development reached 95%. The failure rate for new drug development for certain types of cancer is even higher at 97%. Why is this so? One of the reasons is that in order to achieve good results, in the pre-clinical testing stage, it is necessary to simulate the living environment of cancer cells as much as possible, such as specific genes, proteins or tissues. The existing models used in preclinical testing cannot simulate the real situation well.

Is there any way to improve the success rate of new drug development?

The models currently used in preclinical in vitro testing are cell monolayers (lacking a 3D environment), spheroids (lacking a vascular system and scaffolding) or organoids (lacking a vascular system and complexity).

Here’s where 3D printing comes of great value. I have created a video about the 3D printing industries that have developed rapidly after the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are interested, you can check it out.

3D bioprinting can produce true biomimetic tissue models, vascular systems and bioinks that simulate the cancer environment, providing researchers with a better platform for in vitro testing and improving the success rate of new drug development.

VoxCell BioInnovation Introduction

VoxCell is a tissue engineering company that 3D bioprints human-like cancer tissue models for reliable preclinical testing.

VoxCell provides a true biomimetic solution with obvious advantages.

1. Ultra-high resolution: VoxCell’s 3D bio-printer has an ultra-high resolution of 500 nanometers, which is 200 times higher than a general 3D bioprinter. Thanks to the 2-photon polymerization technology (2PP), detailed blood vessels can be created. Their name “VoxCell” comes from this technology, where the focal point of the laser is called “Voxel”.

2. Physiologically relevant vascular systems: VoxCell’s leading patented software algorithms can generate blood vessels and capillary networks in any defined structure, programmed according to real physiological related factors, allowing tissue models to be created as close to life as possible.

3. Integrated easy to use software: The vascularization software will be fully integrated with VoxCell’s 3D bioprinters and keeps a trade secret. Its software is very easy to use and does not require a professional trained in CAD and 3D drafting. It has predefined models so the user can select a model and print it with just one click. VoxCell also offers the option to fully customise and change specific parameters to generate personalised vascular tissue models.

4. Perfusable tissue models (as a service): VoxCell can deliver the vascularized tissue models directly to the users. Thanks to their high resolution, angiogenesis software, and proprietary bioinks that mimic the cancer environment, tissues created with their technology are very suitable for small research institutions or projects that do not require the purchase of a 3D bioprinter. VoxCell will provide tissue models as a service and be equipped with sterile equipment to infuse the tissue with any drug being tested, allowing researchers to see how the therapy interacts with the 3D cancer environment interactions, truly mimicking the systemic drug delivery in clinical trials.

5. VoxCell is one of the few companies in the market that can create personalized tissues for individual patients. With the patient’s cancer cells, bio-ink, and individual blood vessel images (from angiography), VoxCell can replicate the tumour environment and the surrounding healthy environment to better determine the best treatment plan for the individual.

VoxCell Founder — Karolina Valente

Having said so much, let me introduce Karolina Valente, the founder and CEO of VoxCell. Karolina holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Victoria. After graduation, she stayed on to teach at the University, as an Assistant Teaching Professor. She founded VoxCell in 2020.

University professors starting a business as CEOs are actually very often underappreciated. Investors will question whether they understand the market, business operation, etc. But what I learned about Karolina is that she is a warrior woman who is good at seizing every opportunity to promote VoxCell and integrate resources. I was a judge in several startup competitions, and I was impressed by Karolina. Compared to other founders, she is very introverted and reserved, but you can feel her great enthusiasm for VoxCell and her mission to help cancer drug development from her presentation.

Although the path of entrepreneurship is very difficult, especially in the field of new drug development, Karolina has never complained, in her dictionary she only finds problems and finds ways to solve them. She upholds the belief of medical professionals, that is, “if there is 1% hope, we should try 100%.”

I am grateful to have met such outstanding entrepreneurs as Karolina with courage and inner strength. They have given me the determination and motivation to ride the waves.

Karolina specially recorded a video, here is the video script:

“Hello everyone,

My name is Dr. Karolina Valente and I am the CEO of VoxCell. And what we are doing at VoxCell is: we are creating human-like cancer tissue models for reliable pre-clinical testing.

VoxCell came as an idea when I was doing my PhD and I wanted to find a better way to mimic breast cancer tissue. And with all the bioprinting tools available to me, I could not make a tissue that was truly human-like. Then I had this idea to make my own printer and I started executing that. When I saw that was possible, I incorporated the company. The company was incorporated in August last year, one week before my PhD defense. Although it was a very stressful time, it was also very rewarding. Throughout this journey, I have learned a lot. Going towards human-like cancer tissue models with breast cancer as our first product has been mostly due to a personal story: with my mom having had breast cancer when I was a kid, that also inspired me to study breast cancer during my PhD and now to start with this first tissue model for reliable drug testing.

Throughout this journey, I have met a lot of very interesting people that have been helping me to grow VoxCell considerably. But the most rewarding part of this journey has definitely been seeing my team grow as individuals but also as part of the team. Seeing those amazing people that have been working together with me throughout this journey to grow so much and learn those skills for life: that has been the most rewarding part of the journey.”

As we reach the end of 2021, I’d like to share with you the entrepreneurial stories and projects of my old and new friends in the technology circle. Today I’d like to introduce Veroniek Vermeulen from the Netherlands. I met her through the introduction of a founder of one of the tech startups in my circle.

Veroniek’s Entrepreneurial Story

Veroniek meets the requirements of generation Z people for their boss. She is very capable in business and at the same time she is warm, amiable and sincere in private. Before starting her business, she was the head of the global innovation platform for the $2 billion business of one of the world’s largest FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) companies. Despite her successful career, Veroniek didn’t want to live a life where she was pushed forward by her work. With an inner emptiness that could not be filled with material things or money, she felt that the time had come to change. She needed to find a way to make herself feel fulfilled.

So she did what many people have always dreamed, which is to go on meditation retreats around the world. Starting in 2012, Veroniek took time out of her busy career to travel to the Himalayas, where she began to change her consciousness of life from always chasing fame and fortune to consciously guiding herself to focus on inner peace and living in the present moment, cultivating her inner strength for long-term happiness and true satisfaction. From monasteries in Nepal, Japan, Vietnam, and Myanmar, Veroniek slowly deepened the love from within and sparked the idea of translating the ancient wisdom of meditation into a modern way of life. She put aside her high-paying job and founded Silatha by raising her own funds.

Silatha Introduction

Silatha is the only meditation app that focuses on women’s emotional health management. It is an app specially designed for women by women. Through its unique Anchor Meditation method, Silatha provides support for the great changes women will experience in their lives. These changes include: pregnancy, becoming a new mother, facing inequalities at work, menopause, and so on. The app offers professional meditation sessions focused on women’s topics and allows you to track your daily progress. It also hosts live broadcasts of various subjects to provide additional support to women.

Silatha believes that true happiness comes from within. Instead of seeking outside and relying on others, it is better to return to our heart and find our inner strength and balance. The app has more than 500 meditation sessions to help women solve various problems experienced in life and improve their inner strength. Women can meditate anytime, anywhere. And through its women’s support community, women from all over the world can help each other timely and effectively.

Silatha Demo

I will give you a brief demonstration. You can download the APP from the Android and Apple app stores. When you enter the app, you can choose either self-growth or specific support category.

If you choose the self growth category, you can pick the area of meditation you want to do, such as inner peace. There are 29-day meditation sessions where you can spend a few minutes each day to meditate and record your mood and state.

If you would like to choose a healing for a specific issue, you can click on ‘Specific Support’, which contains key issues that women encounter in their lives and work, from pregnancy to menopause, from motherhood to female leadership. How to heal pains, for example, includes 21 meditation sessions by Zephyr Wildman, one of the UK’s leading yogis. The Embracing Grief meditation series was inspired by her personal story of loss and grief. When Zephyr lost her late husband to cancer, meditation provided a blueprint for her to begin rebuilding her life. She began to see that there were tools she could develop around the grief she was experiencing that would help her move forward with more tenderness, compassion and understanding.

Silatha also invites industry experts to broadcast live on a variety of topics. If you click Tribe, you can watch the live sessions and participate in discussions with fellow women from around the world.

The last thing I want to say is that facing this uncertain world, I am very happy to be with a group of entrepreneurs who have worked hard for their own dreams and forged ahead, and grow every day. I included Veroniek’s self-introduction video. Let’s take a look at it together.

Here is the video script of Veroniek’s self-introduction video:

“I was 34 year old, and I was in the office of the Fortune 100 company, where I was heading the innovations of 2B$ business, I was wearing my power dress as today I would present the innovation of the year, an idea that would make a difference in the lives of millions of people and would bring even more millions of $ to this company.

Ready to shine, I opened the door of the boardroom. But then, I walked into a wall of white men in dark suits, busy among themselves, except for one who was holding up his cup of coffee for a refill. Well I didn’t come there to serve coffee, I came to present the innovation of the year! But not finding a single face, similar to mine, I felt like a stranger who did not belong here. I felt I should swap my power dress for a barista outfit, and the whole situation made me feel insecure, unsatisfied and lost.

And this is a problem! Not only for me, but for all women. 80% of women feel that they are not good enough, 88% feels pressure to be perfect. Resulting in our wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters feeling overwhelmed, insecure, anxious and mentally drained.

History was written and dictated by men, but the world changed. Women now have ALL possibilities, but we didn’t remove the old expectations.

At Silatha we believe being a women should be a source of confidence and not an anxiety

And from my own experience I know that meditation can be an important support to build that confidence. But when I was looking for a meditation app to support me, I couldn’t find one that supported me in my needs as a woman. Nor are they very good in building a lasting habit. Loosing 95% of their users in the first month.

That is why we developed Silatha. A meditation platform for:

  • For the new mom that feels overwhelmed
  • For the business woman who feels insecure by male supremacy
  • For the pregnant women that feels tired and unsure if she can be the best mom in the world
  • Or for the woman that is disoriented by the changes brought by menopause

With calming breathing exercises combined with short coaching to support her in here mental needs and build her confidence, liberating her on her journey to a more enjoyable life, one meditation at a time.”
